How to Argue Well
First of all you would not be arguing unless you’re confident about an idea or thought which is the opposite idea or though of the person you’re arguing with. If you’re in an argument then you obviously have the courage to go against your opponent.
Over the years I have figured out that winning an argument is an art and not a verbal fight as others may think. I have constantly argued with friends and family and debated in sensitive issues like religions, politics, and family matters.
First thing is first, analyze your opponent. Know your opponent’s background and know how he/she thinks on issues that you’re arguing about. By doing so you will know what to expect and you can backfire with the proper statements which is stronger in winning the argument. I have always done this to give me time to think. I let my opponent speak first and let that person express his/her view on the issue first. While my opponent is speaking I find the weak spots on his/her argument so I can pinpoint and fire back on my turn.
Second of all take the blow first; if you’re not familiar with a certain topic’s background then you shouldn’t be bull heading first. Instead, let your opponent take the lead against you and remember his/her strong points. While doing so research about the topic and find every credible background on the issue favoring your view. An argument can go both ways, it can favor one or the other side. If the facts of an issue favor one side then there is nothing to argue about.
Now, while arguing, the most important thing for anyone who wants to win is to keep calm. The person who is calm is the person in control of the argument. I have constantly seen this and being calm advocates the view of your victory. While being calm, you can say something stupid and uncalled for, but you would show your opponent that you’re not intimidated by his/her remarks. If your opponent raises his/her voice over your calm voice that’s a signal that he/she is in fear and your argument is stronger.
So, basically to win any arguments do not bull-head anything without being prepared first. Take your time to understand your opponent and take your time to pinpoint your opponent’s strong points and find his/her weak points. Look for a window, a point in your opponent’s argument in which you can dive in and cut him off with a strong statement with your argument.
