I'm Busy With the iPhone 3G

July 17th, 2008

I got my new iPhone 3G and that’s the reason why I haven’t posted for a while since, I was busy with my new toy. The phone was worth standing in line for 1.5 hours in the Apple store on the second day of the release.

It was funny to see myself being the only Desi guy buying the iPhone 3G. I saw several Desi uncles, aunties, and fobby students, but as expected they saw the price on the device and turned around. Some of them stood in line for a while in front of me, and when an Apple representative came by telling everyone in line about the iPhone 3G, they just gave up their position in line and left.

I go by the saying “you get what you paid for”. I needed a reliable tool while I’m on the go and the iPhone 3G delivers it. As I was playing around with it I figured out how to use it well without reading a single page of the manual. I had a 5th generation iPod before so I knew before hand on how to use Apple’s softwares.

GPS Tracking in Bangladesh
The iPhone 3G has a GPS chip on it to find where you are at; it uses A-GPS, or assisted GPS. Not only that as I’m moving the iPhone tracks you on the map so you basically know where you’re going. The iPhone uses Google Maps, so it’s easy to navigate through it.

I took a look at Bangladesh, and it has Dhaka and Chittagong mapped out, which is incredible. All the roads are on the map and I’m sure I won’t get lost in Dhaka. Since GPS is “Global” positioning system it will track me anywhere in the world, in some parts of 3rd world countries.

Flaw with the iPhone 3G
As I said, the phone is incredible, but like all man-made machines it comes with its flaws. The iPhone 3G’s battery life is horrible if the Wi-Fi, 3G connection, or the location services for GPS tracking are used. I was lucky the power of the phone was run out only to the last bar but it looks like I have to buy a car charger.

Don't Over Do it With your Blog

July 11th, 2008

Let’s face it, blogging isn’t easy it takes a lot of time and energy to make a blog successful. However, to gain attraction that doesn’t mean you have to load it up with numerous buttons and so many other unnecessary graphics. I go to some established blog and I see a lot of them have magazine-style format, for a new blog, that’s a big NO. The reason is simple, these blogs which have the magazine-style format have a foundation of visitors. The visitors are loyal to the blog so they’ll come back regardless the extra time it takes to load the site. The magazine-style blogs contain so many graphic and it takes more than enough time to load. For an un-established blog the longer it takes to load the more the chances the visitor will leave.

Simplicity is the Best
The easiest way to keep your visitors happy is to give them what they want as fast as you can. That means no unnecessary obstacles coming up like pop-ups or extra graphics which will make it hard for your reader from reading your content. Remember, content first and everything else after.

Don’t add all those Google, Digg, StumbleUpon buttons on the side, because they are more graphics which will increase the load time. If you were to add those subscribe buttons then insert it underneath the post, but I recommend you keep it simple such as one subscription button on the sidebar.

Remember you want more RSS more than anything, I’ll write about it in a future post. But overall keep your blog design clean and simple, WordPress has so many themes to choose from and modify you should check it out.

Tell me what you guys think, am I right?

Pink City in Bangladesh

July 8th, 2008

As I mentioned before, I’m originally from the South Asian country Bangladesh. And I couldn’t help but notice the incredible economic boom which is happening in Bangladesh. Away from the busy Dhaka city, investors already started to build low-priced houses for the middle-income residents. Look at the pictures below; as you can see construction is still going on and so far the progress is going on well. Over 100 other major projects are going on in Dhaka, Sylhet, and Chittagong, and else where in Bangladesh.

The Good and the Bad of Apple's iPhone 3G

July 7th, 2008

Apple's iPhone 3G
A while ago Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc., announced the iPhone 3G or the unofficial name, iPhone 2. This iPhone will have all the features like its predecessor, the original iPhone, plus several more features, which is hard to believe, for a cell phone.

The Upside
Microsoft Exchange now can be used with iPhone. I’m not familiar with the software because I never used it but according to Apple it’s basically created for corporate users. Apple wants the next iPhone to be used by both the regular individuals and by enterprise people.

It also has GPS, yes you read it right, it has a built in GPS system on the iPhone 3G. So basically you can go anywhere and track yourself on your phone; it tracks you by getting your exact point from three sources, a near by Wi-Fi signal, near by cell phone towers, or directly from the GPS satellites. I give 5 Stars to Mr. Jobs for adding the GPS feature on the next iPhone.

Not only that, the biggest surprise to iPhone fans and everyone else was the price that Mr. Jobs announced to everyone, an incredible low price for $199 for the 8 GB, and $299 for the 16 GB. With our US economy in recession it still wouldn’t stop someone like me to buy one without a second thought. After I saw the price for the 8GB I was just blown away and I said to myself that I will get one and I’ll find the money some how to get it .

The Downside
This is the part that blows big time. You cannot buy the iPhone 3G online nor can you activate it by yourself. You have to go to an AT&T store and actually sign a 2-year contract with AT&T and pay for the iPhone 3G up front. After I heard that I became hesitant about buying it. I’m currently with T-Mobile and I thought that I would just buy the iPhone 3G at full price, wait for couple of months for some techi guy to develop a software to unlock it and use T-mobile 3G network, unfortunately that plan is in the trash. AT&T has one of the worst plans I have ever seen, their lowest plan is $39.99 for 450 anytime minutes and with 5000 minutes for nights and weekends. Also, for the data plan, AT&T has raised the price from $20/month to $30/month and they are no longer sharing their revenue with Apple, sucks for Steve Jobs. So basically if I leave T-Mobile, since my contract with them ended long time ago, and sign up with AT&T, I would have to pay $36 activation fee, plus pay $40/month for voice calls, plus $30/month for the data plan, and on top of that taxes are added.

It’s Locked People
So, if you were a T-Mobile user and somehow you got your hands on an iPhone 3G, it still would be hard to unlock it because of all the restrictions Apple has placed on it. Steve Jobs emphasized in last September that it would focus more on keeping the phone from being unlocked illegally by hackers, all I can say is good luck. Hackers are everywhere and programming, gadgets, and basically anything else about technology they will spend their time on. In France, by French law, Apple has to sell unlocked iPhones, even with popularity and with money Mr. Jobs can’t sell iPhones the way he wants to the French.

Developer Program
Apple's iPhone 3GThe developer program was release on March 9th, where Apple will share revenue with all the third-party developers for creating applications for the iPhone 3G. So, if you have a lot of time in your hands you can actually applications for iPhones and if people buy them you get to keep 70% of the revenue. This move by Apple will really boost it’s popularity.

Steve Jobs said they want at least 10 million iPhones sold for 2008. So far 6 million iPhones have been sold till today so, with the new iPhone 3G with the discounted price, I’m sure they will surpass their goal.

So let’s look at some of the features for iPhone 3G:

  1. Google Maps/GPS
  2. iPod (for Music and Videos)
  3. iTunes
  4. Calculator (regular and scientific)
  5. SDK (for developers)
  6. Portrait and Landscape formats (when you turn the iPhone horizontally and vertically)
  7. Online eBay Shopping
  8. Interactive Advanced 3D Games
  9. Photo Gallery
  10. 2.0 Megapixel Camera
  11. Loopt (an incredible social application which tells where your friends are and what they are doing and more)
  12. Internet Browser (the best in the mobile market)
  13. YouTube Player
  14. TypePad Blogging Software( with photo blogging)
  15. SMS (text messaging)
  16. Visual Voicemail
  17. 3G Enabled (for faster video streaming and downloads and faster internet browsing)
  18. Associated Press (news directly delivered to your phone)
  19. Multiple Languages

There are so many more features but there’s too many to name. I’ll do my best to get one and once I get it and I’ll write a a “really” good review.

I basically want the phone because it’s an mp3 player plus it has a GPS system because it’ll save me money from buying a Microsoft Zune and buying a GPS navigation system for my car.

It also has a special application created by Dr. S. Mark Williams for medical students to study the human body, which favors my path. Also MIMvista created an incredible application for doctors to keep up with their patients’ health status. As I’m typing this sentence more and more medical applications are being created by medical personnel.

The iPhone 3G will be released in AT&T stores on July 11th of this year, just less than a week away.

What do you guys think? Do you think it’s worth buying the phone?

How Important is your Bio on your Blog

July 6th, 2008

If you haven’t added your photo, your bio, or made a simple about me page, then you should do it ASAP. When you have an about me page, it actually shows what type of person you are toward your readers.

Photo

AJ, yeah that's me.

You’re a blogger, a writer writing online content, that’s all a reader knows about you without your picture; however, you should add more to define the personality of your blog. I actually enjoy reading the content written by someone who I’m familiar with. When you know how a person looks like, then it’s easy for you to connect to that person in someway and it pushes you to read his/her content. When I go to other different blogs, regardless of the topic of the blog, I enjoy reading the content if the writer is a Desi, someone of generation X or Y born, a tech person, a political person, a cell phone techi, or just an interesting person overall. I’m not discriminating any blog based on who the writer is, but I just find blogs with writers who connect with the qualities which I mentioned a but more interesting to me.

About Me Page
Along with your photo, you really should add an about me page telling your readers a little about yourself. A reader who favors your blog will be most likely someone who knows who you are well. With my about page I went all out and wrote a small paragraph about myself and what I want to achieve in life. I decided to create something creative with the introduction of my about me page:

Believe it or not he is a self-centered, unselfish, friendly, conceited, Bangladeshi-American asshole. You may remember him from such blockbuster movies as “I’m a Dumbass”, “It’s cause I’m Brown Ain’t It”, “Who Let the Fishes Out”, and “Not another Curry Movie”.

He loves to talk and he loves making friends. He loves writing about interesting topics, especially those that would bore people to death.

He is single and he’s currently accepting applications from drop dead gorgeous ladies; he’ll only give interviews to pretty ladies who come in wearing a red or black saree for the interview.

Now the fish joke was was an inside Desi joke. I’m a Bengali and we eat a lot of fish and may be that’s why we look so fresh ;) . Other Desis, especially the Pakistani Punjabis, know that Bengalis eat a lot of fish and they poke fun at us. In reality I can’t stand fish, the only meats I eat is chicken and goat.

Anyways, I decided to add a little humor to my about me page and I recommend you to do it too, but please don’t copy mine, otherwise Google will get you.

What do you guys think? Do you have a photo or an about me page on your blog?

Who are these Curry-Smelling Brown People?

July 5th, 2008

For those who are still confused about Desis, or brown people from South Asia here are quick tips that will help you understand us. If you can, please give me your feedback.

Stove is covered with aluminum foil
To avoid cleaning the stove often, the moms usually cover the entire stove, the metallic parts, with foil.

The Dishwasher is used a dish rack
Since the cupboards are occupied with spices the dishwasher is the only place to put clean dishes and it’s never used to wash dishes.

You use grocery bags to hold garbage
We could say we recycle a lot, and we like to save money, so we use plastic grocery bags as small trash bags.

You will always leave your shoes at the door
Since most Desis are either Hindus or Muslims the house is usually used as a praying sanctuary and it’s a religious ground for praying during praying times. Therefore, the floor must be cleaned an who so ever enters the house must take his or her shoes off.

Never order room service
Whenever Desis stay at a hotel, they will never use room service for it cost more.

Desis own a rice cooker and pressure cooker
We love rice! We eat rice with almost everything so a rice cooker is a must. And we use pressure cookers to save gas while cooking.

Desis major in the fields of engineering, medicine, or law
Yeah that’s a common thing with us Desis. My father is an engineer and I’m in the path of the medical field.

Desis live with parents till marriage
That is totally normal and parents prefer it that way. Also, the children likes it too since it’s freeloading off of the parents.

Parents will call and ask if you’ve eaten, even if it’s midnight
This usually goes favoring first born sons, the mothers will call their sons often and ask if they’ve eaten when they are out.

Parents send money to South Asia
We all have relatives back home and or parents will send money constantly to help them in business or in medical bills or for education. I know my father sent tens of thousands of dollars back to Bangladesh.

Desis have joined a CD club at least once
I remember signing up with BMG music because it was $1 per CD. After two years I cancelled the service to avoid collection records on my credit file. Desis do it cause we first think we got a great deal then we find out that we have to buy a CD at regular price and curse out th CD company.

Desis never discuss their love life or sex with their parents
This is a big NO in our society. Parents will say they don’t know what sex is and yet there are 1.5 billion people in South Asia, I wonder why. In Bollywood movies they show Desi youth saying “I love this girl or that guy” but in reality we never tell our parents if we’re in love with someone.

Desi parents are never happy with their childrens’ grades
Even if you get A they will demand something higher or they’ll ask you why didn’t you get an A+ or why didn’t get into the honor roll.

Desis call an older person whom they’ve never met before “uncle” or “auntie”
This is common in our society. Uncle is preferred over “mister” since it shows respect to one’s elders.

The first thing a Desi adult will ask you is “where are your parents from?”
They ask this to see if they know anyone who is from your area or anyting of that sort to find a connection to you.

When parents meet strangers and talk for a few minutes, you find you’re talking to a distant cousin.
I have nearly a 100 first cousins in my family, and I only know 10 of them. I can’t imagine how many second or third cousins, but I know they are spread all over in Bangladesh, UK, Saudi Arabia, and in India.

Desi parents don’t realize phone connections to foreign have advanced
When they call back home in South Asia, Desi parents scream at the top of their lungs just so the person in the other end would be able to hear them.

When Desi fathers get together they talk politics
Even if they are in USA and they have USA citizenship, they will still talk about the politics of South Asia; usually Bangladeshi or Pakistani politics.

Desi moms grow their own vegetables
This is very common with Desis; mothers usually grow tomatoes, peppers, etc. in the backyard because they like to cook fresh veggies for better taste in their cooking.

Desis rely only on foreign cars
No matter what you will see 99% of all Desis around your area driving a Toyota Camry, a Toyota Corolla, a Honda Accord, or a Honda Civic. If you see a trail of different Camrys, Corollas, Civics and Accords in the road, you know they are going to a brown people convention or a Desi party.

There’s a pungent smell of spices in Desi homes
My friend from Palestine complains about how my clothes, car, and house smells like curry. Eh, we can’t help is we love our curry.

Desi parents tie up their luggage with rope while traveling back to Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
Even after 18 years of living in the USA, my mom still took a box to Bangladesh and tied rope around it.

Whenever Desis are invited at a friend’s new house they wil take a quick tour of the house
When a person buys a new house, it’s customary to present his relatives and friends to give them a nice quick tour of the house.

Marriage is a big issue with Desis
Most to all young Desis are worried to choose between love marriage and arranged marriage. Usually their parents prefer arranged marriage since it’s through the marriage. No matter what, in every Desi circle of friends, the conversation of marriage will come about.

What Does it Mean to be a Successful Blogger

July 5th, 2008

”Success,” a word with a strong meaning that a lot of us are trying to see our self as or we already have gained it. Now most to all of us want to be in the top of the blogsphere, or close to it. We want to be well known by our writings and by who were by most bloggers. But the question is how do we get there? As in how to we get our popularity to rise?

Making a lot of money and buying expensive merchandises isn’t the meaning of a being a successful blogger. Making tremendous amount of money from blogging is the result of being a successful blogger.

The following, which I believe, are factors which determine a successful blogger.

Name
Well this should be the obvious one. A successful blogger is known by who he is. For example, if Darren Rowse, the blogging guru, guest blogged here, traffic will pour in just because people want to read Darren Rowse’s writing. So, if you want to be a successful it’s very important to get your name well known.

Writing Style
Really? Yes, really. Writing style is a big factor in being a successful blogger. People come to your site and they want to read your content. Or if you were to guest blog somewhere else people will read just because you wrote it because they favor the way you write.

Traffic
Yes, no kidding, traffic is always important. A successful blogger knows how to gain traffic or already established a strong foundation of traffic to his site. Getting traffic is what mostly shows the success of a blogger. A blog is nothing without traffic, I’ll go further into this in a future post.

Feedback
A successful blogger gets a strong feedback from his/her readers. Getting comments is hard to a certain point but in good quality posts, I see that people actually comment saying things like “great work” and “wow, you’re making sense”.

So, these are the factors which determine a successful blogger, according to my observations on the web. If you have different opinions don’t hesitate to comment on it.

Write the Way you Talk

July 5th, 2008

The title should give you an idea of what this post is about. The best way to communicate and write for your readers is to basically write as if you’re naturally talking to them. That way they are comfortable reading your content and they can read your content easily. Don’t use big words or sophisticated methods to look important. Remember when I said “simplicity is the best,” well I was referring to everything. Simple words to explain your position or argument is the best way to get your point across.

Let’s look at an example:

The commencement of my blogging signifies to my visitors that my forceful desire to express my perusal to my outmost potential of my expertise.

Now with a sentence like the one above, you’re definitely not going to have a fan club. Let’s rephrase that sentence.

My starting of blogging shows my visitors that I have a strong desire to express my views to the best of my abilities based on my expertise.

Now you should know that the second sentence sounds a lot better and it requires less thinking processing the words. As I said before “simplicity is the best” and the simpler your words or sentences are the better.

Don’t try to impress others and don’t try to look like a smartass because blog readers don’t like that. Blog readers stay on a blog on an average of 10 seconds looking for something interesting. So, if they read sentences which shows sophisticated words and it requires them to do thinking while they are not in Calculus class or English class, than the possibility of them becoming your reading fan is very slim. I hope this helps.

What do you guys think?

10 Tips on Starting a New Blog

July 5th, 2008

As you know I just started this blog after a while. I used to blog for DesiNotes.com till I sold it for academic purposes.

I learned a lot about blogging as I blogged for DesiNotes and a lot of readers would classify me as someone who knows his stuff when it comes to blogging and how to gain popularity on the web. The following are some tips that I recommend you follow when starting a new blog. The following post is over 900 words so unless you got the patience to read, just read the the first sentence of each tip.

1. Register a Domain Name
Having your own domain name is very important. No matter what, unless you’re lucky like Amit Agarwal, you have less credibility without your own domain name. So, make sure you get your domain name if you are actually serious about blogging.

One of the cheapest ways to get a domain name is through Yahoo’s Small Business service. They offer $1.99 domains for first time customers for the first year.

2. Choose the Right Blogging Software
WordPress, with no doubt, is the best software to use when it comes to blogging. WordPress offers fast and easy way to install required plug-ins for on-the-go-ready-to-roll. It is also the most used blogging software in the blogsphere and it syncs well with search engines for efficient optimization so, stick with WordPress.

3. Good SEO and Deep Link
Make sure you have a good URL system set up for the search engines to easily read. If you have “www.myblog.com/something=somthing&postID=234″ in the URL then it’s going to be hard for the search engines to pick up your blog easily. However, if you have something like “www.myblog.com/this-is-my-post” then search engines such as Google can easily read it and it will easily pick it up to send targeted traffic.

Also, deep link your post, as in the URL of the post comes right after the domain name, “www.myblog.com/this-is-my-post”. Deep linking also helps search engines to pick up your site faster and it also keeps the URL clean. WordPress has this feature in the settings section.

4. Choose the Right Theme
Anyone can offer information but what makes a difference is how you present the information. Choosing the right theme is very important when it comes to blogs. I’ve noticed that all successful blogs have light themes which gives the readers a comfortable view of the blog content. Dark themes such as blogs with black background with white text will not do since readers will have a hard time viewing the content. Even though if you think dark-colored blog looks “cool” don’t use it, stay with the white.

Also, make sure your blog is clean, as in don’t put all these junks on the right and left columns to make your blog look busy; go by the saying “simplicity is the best”.

Last but not least, make sure your theme is not that graphical, choose a theme that loads fast and still looks good. Themes with heavy graphics tend to slow down the loading of the blog and visitors tend to go elsewhere.

5. Choose the Right Focus
When choosing the topic of the blog make sure you write about topics that revolve around a certain focus. As in don’t wonder off to other topics, choose one topic and stick with it. For example, this blog, the focus is personal development, that’s my main focus and writing about blogging is just on the side. By sticking with one topic you can basically target a certain number of audiences and your readership will grow from there.

6. Be Creative
When you write, make sure you write differently from other bloggers. Make sure you be creative which will give you a label of uniqueness in the blogsphere. If you’re going to write about something make sure you write about the topic differently from any other bloggers.

7. Don’t Blog for Money
I know most people start out blogging just for money; they probably been to many successful blogs and they get excited about making money online and they start out to blog just for the money; that’s wrong! If you blog for the money then you may as well not blog at all. Blogging for money will eventually make you quit blogging. Your reason for blogging should not be about the money but to spread your ideas. Money will come but you have to give it time. Rookie bloggers usually wait for a week or so and if the money isn’t pouring in then they quit and they tend to get the disbelief that blogging will not make you money. The truth is blogging will make you money no matter what, but it’s how you blog that determines how much money you can make from it.

8. Write Quality Posts
I cannot emphasize on this enough. Anyone can write, but it takes time to write quality posts. Don’t rush and make sure your writing make sense. Read your writing several times before publishing it so it’ll be flawless to your readers.

Whatever you do make sure you don’t write content like a 1st grader. Spell check your content and make sure you’re not making constant grammatical errors. With good writing comes loyal users because then it’ll show them that you’re a good author and they will come back over and over again to read your content.

9. Be Consistent with the Number of Posts
I know when you first start your blog, you’re excited and you want to write as much as you can on the first day but I got news for you, that’s wrong. Don’t make the mistake of tiring yourself out by spending the entire day filling your blog with posts every hour. Unless you can do it everyday don’t publish any posts every hour. I recommend you publish at least one post a day to begin with and work your way up to 2 posts then 3 posts per day. By doing so you’re being consistent.

10. Have Fun
One of the biggest mistakes that rookie bloggers make is making blogging a chore and eventually quitting. I’m guilty myself when I first started out but eventually I grew out of it. Blogging should be fun, it should be a way to express yourself. So, don’t stress about blogging, have fun with it.

Who’s Nora Ali?

July 3rd, 2008
Nora Ali

If you are part of the Bangladeshi community in the USA then you should already know who this young lady is. However, for those who don’t know, Nora Ali is an American born Bangladeshi who won the US title of American Junior Miss of 2007; besides her Bengali ethnicity, she is also the first Muslim ever to win the title. She represented the state of Minnesota and got a cash prize of over $50,000. This beautiful young lady is very talented in music as she’s been playing the violin for years. She was a 4.0 GPA student in her high school, and currently she is in her first year in Harvard University.

She is very modern as she was born and raised in the USA. However, she wants to go back to Bangladesh and help develop the country and destroy poverty. We can see that she knows her roots and she knows where she comes from. What does this look like so far? It looks like, another Bengali patriot taking the same path as Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Nora is a probashi Bengali (Bengali abroad) and after she finishes her school she is planning to do something positive for Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’ Positive Futur
e
As you can see NRBs like Nora and others of my generation are Bangladesh’s future. Insh’Allah in 5-10 years the Bangladeshis of USA, like the Bangladeshis of UK, will take Bangladesh forward into the industrialized world.
